This is a dictionary of the terms most used by electronic cigarette users. Analogue: Is the term given to proper tobacco cigarettes, by electronic cigarette users. Atomiser: The atomiser is the part of the electronic cigarette that is responsible for turning the liquid nicotine solution in the cartridge, into the vapour that is inhaled and exhaled. An atomiser has a very fine nichrome coil (similar to the one used in hair dryers) which is wrapped around a moist wick. When you inhale, the battery switches on and a charge is sent through the coil. This charge heats the coil to approx 180 C in a second. The heat then turns the liquid nicotine into a vapour. Nicknames: Atty. Battery: The battery is the part of the electronic cigarette that provides the power to heat the atomiser, so that the liquid nicotine can be vapourised. Most electronic cigarettes use a 3.7 volt lithium ion battery. There are generally two types of battery - an automatic and a manual. An automatic battery activates when you inhale and switches off when you stop. A manual battery has a button that requires you to hold it down, to activate the battery and stops when you let go. The advantage of a manual battery is that you can preheat the atomiser before inhaling, thus allowing a shorter inhalation time, to produce the same amount of vapour. The disadvantage is that you use up the battery a lot faster and you also burn up your liquid nicotine supply faster. Cartridge: The cartridge is the part of the electronic cigarette that holds and stores the liquid nicotine and would normally represent the filter part of a tobacco cigarette. Nicknames: Cart or Carts Cartomiser: A cartomiser is a combined atomiser and cartridge, which is inseparable and disposable. The idea is that each time you start with a new cartomiser, you start with a brand new atomiser and in turn, you will get the best performance possible. Cartomisers are also capable of holding more liquid nicotine and so last longer than a standard disposable cartridge. Cartomisers generally also produce greater amounts of vapour, but cost more than a standard cartridge. Drip or Dripping: This is the act of putting liquid nicotine drops directly onto the atomiser, as opposed to refilling empty cartridges or buying new cartridges. This method is used by most electronic cigarette users, as it is easier than refilling empty cartridges with a needle and syringe. This method also produces more vapour and flavour. Filler Wad: The filler wad is the material that holds the liquid nicotine in suspension, inside the cartridge. The fabric is polyester wool. To replace the filler, you can buy polyester wool from a pet shop. It the same material used in fish tanks filters. We suggest you only use the filler you can purchase in a pet shop, as it is be chemical free, to avoid killing the fish. Nicknames: Batting, Wool, Stuffing. LED: This is the light at the tip of the battery, that gives your electronic cigarette a more authentic appearance. When you take a drag, the light glows. They can come in an array of colours, but the most popular are red, orange and blue. The light is activated whenever you inhale on the electronic cigarette. The LED light also has a specific purpose. When it blinks approx 30 times, it is an indication that your battery is low and needs to be recharged. When it blinks 5 times, it is an indication that you are inhaling for too long, which in most cases is anything longer than 5 seconds. Mini Electronic Cigarette: This is a type of electronic cigarette, that is only slightly bigger than a regular tobacco cigarette. Pass-through Battery A pass through battery is not an actual battery, but rather a device that looks like a battery. It is an in-line device, that does not hold a charge. The difference is a cable coming out of the LED, which has a USB plug on the end. You plug the USB plug into a USB slot on your computer and screw the battery into your atomiser, like you would normally do and use the power from your computer to heat the atomiser. The benefit, if you work at a computer all day, is that you need not keep recharging the battery. You just let the computer's USB power your electronic cigarette all day. Pen Style Electronic Cigarette: This is a type of electronic cigarette that resembles a ballpoint pen, rather than a cigarette. It has no light and does not look like a cigarette. The advantages are that it does not attract attention and it usually has a larger wick, thus lasting longer and producing more vapour. Primer Fluid: Primer fluid is the liquid that electronic cigarette manufacturers lubricate the atomiser with, prior to shipping. The reason for this is that most people will open the box, assemble the product and start inhaling, without putting on a new cartridge. Without the primer fluid, the atomiser would overheat and break on the first day. Super Mini: This is a type of electronic cigarette that closely resembles a tobacco cigarette, in both shape and size. Even smaller than the mini. Throat Hit: This is the feeling of liquid nicotine hitting the back of the throat. With tobacco cigarettes, it’s that dry, hot, slightly burning feeling. With electronic cigarettes, the throat hit is usually determined by the nicotine content and the temperature of the atomiser. Topping Off: This describes the act of refilling a cartridge. We simply refer to it as refilling with refill liquid. Vape or Vaping: This is the act of inhaling the vapour from the electronic cigarette. It’s the electronic equivalent of “smoking” a cigarette. Nickname: Vaping Vapour: This is the actual “smoke like” vapour, that you inhale and exhale, while using the electronic cigarette. © Copyright 2009-12. Electronic-Cigarette-Suppliers.
