Refilling ECS Electronic Cigarette Cartomizers
Note: New Cartomizers: The ECS 2010 cartomizers have been improved and redesigned for the new year (released in January 2012). If you never refill your carts, then this won't affect you, but if you do, you will find the task much easier. Wheras the older cartomizers had a seperate silicone seal, which had to be correctly inserted and centralised before refitting the endcap, the new type has a moulde seal which seats into the endcap. When removing the cap for refilling, the seal will probably come out with the cap - as a single item. Thus once refilled, simply press the endcap (holding the seal) in to place and you are good to go. Simple and much quicker!
How to refill empty cartomizers
A) The Correct Way After a while the cartomizer will stop producing enough vapour. Don’t continue using it until it starts tasting “dry and burny” as this causes permanent damage. At this stage it is time to either replace the cartomizer with a new one, or to refill it. 1) Attach the needle to the syringe and open the bottle of liquid. 2) Remove the cover from the needle and insert the needle into the bottle. 3) Turn the bottle upside down and draw the liquid into the syringe. 4) Only take a small amount. Between .5 ml and 1 ml should be fine. Anything more is wasted. If you are filling more than 1 cartomizer, you can draw more liquid into the syringe. You can always put it back in the bottle afterwards.
Remember, although ECS 2010 cartomizers are only available in Tobacco, Cherry, Coffee and Menthol (in either high, medium or low strengths) refill liquids are available in many flavours such as Tobacco Storm, Tobacco Rush, Cherry, Coffee, Mint, Vanilla, Virginia, French Pipe, Caramel, and Whiskey. Most are available in high, medium and low, but Cherry and Vanilla also have zero strength. Remember you can mix and match with liquids!  5) Hold the cartomizer in one hand, filter to the top. It is better to remove the cartomizer from the cigarette while filling, but not really necessary.
6) Straighten one end of the paper clip and insert it into the centre hole of the white cartomizer end cap. Carefully prise the cap out of the cartomizer. Sometimes the cap is really tight, so you might need to use a little force, but be careful not to damage the cap. The inner silicone washer is moulded to fit snugly into the end cap, so it should come out as a single unit. If not, carefully remove the seal too.
 7) Looking into the open cartomizer, you will see a white “cloth” which is the storage well of the device. It is here that the liquid is held. Ensure that the centre hole is central, open and do not get liquid in it.
 8) Carefully push the needle down the side of the cartomizer. Don’t force it. The needle will enter between the wall and the outer layer of cloth. Go down about half way. Squeeze the syringe to deposit liquid. Squeeze slowly and steadily. Repeat on the opposite side until you see the liquid on the top of the cloth storage wick. It is now full.
9) Dry the silicone seal and end cap, assemble together and carefully replace it into the cartomizer. Make sure it is fully closed.
10) Now place the cartomizer in your mouth. Blow hard from the end cap side into a tissue or piece of toilet paper. This forces the new liquid into the cloth and expels any surplus liquid, which will end up in your mouth on the first drag. 11) Clean the battery threads and screw the cartomizer back into the battery. 12) Take a drag. If too full, you will hear bubbling and gurgling sounds when you draw on the e-cigarette. This is because instead of the atomizer burning a moist mixture to form a vapour, it is flooded and ineffectively trying to heat up the fluid. This could cause the casing of the cartomizer to get hot. This is definitely a case of "less is more". Blow again to see if there is excess liquid. 13) Put any surplus liquid back in the bottle. Wipe the needle clean and replace the cover. 14) Store the bottle of liquid in a cool, dark place. 15) It will take a few drags on the cigarette, before it starts producing good vapour. B) Quick Way
Sometimes it is not possible to strip your e-cig and refill properly. Maybe you are in a hurry or maybe you are in a meeting where reaching for all your goodies will take too long. 1) For a quick "short-cut" method of filling, hold the cartomizer in one hand, filter to the top. It is best to remove the cartomizer from the electronic cigarette completely, while filling. 2) Carefully push the needle through the hole and into the cartomizer. Don’t force it, as there is a plastic seal inside, that could get damaged.
3) Once through this, angle the needle to the side casing. The needle will enter the fibre wool, used as the packing for the storage well, at the bottom half of the cartomizer chamber. This looks like an ordinary cigarette filter.
4) Tilt the needle slightly towards the edge. Go in as far as you can, but be careful not to hit the atomizer, which is at the bottom, leaning towards the side. 5) When you have gone down as far as you can, slowly release the liquid and withdraw the needle. Don't go right down to the very bottom, just until you are sure the needle is in the filter packing. 6) Only take between 0.3ml and 0.5ml as because you can't see what is going on, you will probably overfill. 7) Put any surplus e-liquid back in the bottle. Wipe the needle clean and replace the protective cover. 8) Screw the cartomizer back onto the battery. 9) Wipe the whole electronic cigarette clean and dry and wash excess le-iquid off your hands. Right, now you are good to go. 10) The next time you refill the cartomizer, try to locate the same entry hole the needle made last time. This will make things easier and prevent damage. If it seems to be leaking fluid into your mouth or if it is not drawing properly, you may have displaced the seal. This is simple to rectify. Using a paper clip or finger nail, prise off the endcap. You will see a rubber seal inside. Simply straighten this so that it seals against the side of the chamber.The first description is the best way to refill a cartomizer, if you have the time. Remove the endcap, remove the rubber seal, insert the needle into the cottonwool wadding and inject the fluid. Then re-assemble the cartomizer, blow it clean and you're good to go. Please note that the newer ECS 2010 cartomizers have only 1 inner seal and an endcap. The older type (the ECS 4081 in particular) had 2 inner seals and a filter cloth as well as the endcap.
Most cartomizers have a centre tube, for airflow, to help restrict liquid flow into the mouth. These do sometimes split or start to come loose. Your cartomizer will still work without this tube, but be careful not to close the centre hole. Don't get the e-liquid in this air hole. Always store the bottle of e-liquid in a cool, dark place, like a cupboard.
Note: You don't have to wait until a cartomizer is dry before refilling. If leaving home for a while, fill up first to avoid the inconvenience. Note also that a bottle of refill liquid should give you about 20 or 30 doses and each cartomizer can be refilled about 5 times. Depending on how you use it, a full cartomizer is equivalent to about 15 to 20 cigarettes. A further point to note: Never leave your e-cigarette, cartomizers or refiller in the sun. Do not leave them to any heat eg. the cubby of a hot vehicle. This will cause sweating and leakage. On the odd occasion we have had customers reporting leakage from the cartomizers into the protective plastic wrappers. While a little messy and inconvenient, there is nothing wrong with the cartomizer. Simply wipe clean and blow excess liquid out before use. Depending on how much leakage occurred, it may not last quite as long, but will still work fine. Although our stocks are transported in insulated containers and stored on our premises in cool dark conditions, we have no control on what happens once they leave us.
